Alfonso Caruana is a Sicilian Mafiosi and at one time was the boss of the nunt-Caruana Mafia Family in Canada
(click here for history of the Montreal Mafia.), he had acquired Canadian citizenship sometime in 1978.
Alfonso Caruana was born in Castelvetrano which is in the province of Trapini, Sicily on Tuesday the 1st of January 1946. Both his grandfather and father were members of Cosa Nostra, the family having originally come from Siculiana a province of Agrigento and they were closely associated with the *Contrera Family* mainly through a series of marriages. For example Alfonso Caruana married his niece Giuseppina Caruana and between them they had a son and two daughters. Now when the Caruanas and the *Contreras* moved to Montreal, Canada, some time in the mid-1960s they soon affiliated themselves with Nick Rizzuto and his son Vito Rizzuto. Together they became involved with drugs trafficking and other rackets.

Caruana's career in Cosa Nostra
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arriving in Canada sometime in 1968, Alfonso Caruana only had $100 in his pocket and made out that he was an electrician. Ironically some ten years or so later he was found with $600,0000 in a suitcase at the international airport of Zurich in Switzerland, but after paying a fee he was released.
Because of conficts within the Cotroni Crime Family Caruana along with his brothers Gerlando and Pasquale had to leave Montreal in the 1970s and go to Caracas in Venezuela. In 1978 they returned to Montreal after the boss of the Cotroni Family Paolo Violi had been killed.
Early in the 1980s Alfonso established himself close to Lugano in a luxurious villa. There he oversaw the laundering of cash from heroin trafficking. The funds were deposited in various Canadian banks and then channelled via Swiss bank accounts. A couple of years later, Caruana moved to the stockbroker belt close to London. He owned a ?450,000 mansion from which he supervised a heroin pipeline from Thailand, through England to Canada. Caruana had a partner whilst he was in the UK and that was Francesco Di Carlo. He (Caruana) travelled to Thailand to establish the route, but when the pipeline was dismantled in England some time in 1985, Caruana evaded arrest and moved back to Montreal in a small suburb where he opened a pizzeria. There he prepared pizzas whilst his wife was in charge of the pay-desk. Throughout all this Caruana was organizing a network which smuggled approximately eleven metric-tons of cocaine to Italy between the years 1991 and 1994. Alfonso gathered together the cocaine producers from the Colombian Cartels along with the Italian distributors and six 'Ndrangheta families from Calabria. It was alleged at this time that the *Contrera-Caruana family were known as "the fly-wheel of the the drug trade and the indispensable link between suppliers and distributors."
I will continue this section here later...
Caruana's career in Cosa Nostra continued
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The investigation was code-named Operation Cartagine and started when police seized approximately 5497 kilos of cocaine which for that time was an European record in the March of 1994. In 1995, the Turin Prosecutors Office issued the indictment and the operation neutralized the most important narcotics supply line to Europe claimed the investigators.
Alfonso Caruana was sentenced in absentia on Wednesday the 30th of July 1997 by the Palermo court of appeal. He was given 21 years, 10 months for Mafia association, aggravating importing, possession and sale of large quantities of narcotics, conspiracy to traffic narcotics and for his involvement in the trafficking of heroin in the 1980s. Also at this time Caruana was prosecuted in Turin for trafficking cocaine in the 1990s.
The court in Palermo also stated that the network was a "further indication of the high criminal capability" of Alfonso Caruana who had always managed to evade every judicial proceeding in the last decades and somehow managed to reach the top of the international drug trade. Cleverly adjusting his criminal contacts, Caruana showed such skill that he was considered to be one of the most important exponents of the drugs trade. He was arrested in the July of 1998 in Woodbridge, Ontario as part of an international police operation called Project Omerta for the trafficking of cocaine from Colombia to Canada.
Of course to try and avoid being aligned to the crimes, Caruana claimed that he was just a humble car wash attendant. But according to police, he was in charge of one of the largest drug dealing networks in the world. RCMP Chief Superintendent Ben Soave said at the time:
Quote:
"If organized crime was a hockey game, Mr Caruana would be [Wayne] Gretzky."
Later Caruana pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiring to import and traffick a quantity of some 1500 kilos of cocaine; he was sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Ontario Superior Court in the February of 2000. The Canadian court gave the order that Alfonso Caruana be extradited to Italy in the November of 2004. This order is still being appealed.
